Neighborhood Selection!

When selecting a neighborhood to buy a home, there are key things to look for to aid in your decision making process.

Of course size and overall appearance are often main considerations when purchasing a home.  How large the rooms are, whether the kitchen is big enough, does it contain a master bathroom or a fireplace, has it been updated, etc. are all key aspects to consider; make sure, however, you keep sight of the big picture.....

Do your homework and verify a couple of things before you make an offer and find out that after you've moved in with your four and five year old children that there is a sex offender living down the block!

What to look for.........
Here are a few suggestions with links to get information from.

1. What are the schools like? - use this link to check ratings.

2.  Is there a sex offender living in the vicinity?

3. When driving through the neighborhood is graffiti visible?  If so, there may be gang
related activity around.  Were there sneakers hanging over the power wires?
Sometimes this is an  indication of a spot where drugs are sold.

4. Consider the possibilities of living across from or near a playground.... Easily
accessible for the children, as well as a place for teens and others to gather when
it gets dark.  Would you mind the constant noise?

5. Make a list of the activities you engage in regularly and stores you visit frequently-
movies, the health club, church. See how far you would have to travel from each
neighborhood you are considering to engage in your most common activities.

6. See for yourself.  Once you’ve narrowed your focus to two or three neighborhoods,
go there, and walk around. Are homes tidy and well maintained? Are streets quiet?
Pick a warm day if you can and chat with people working or playing outside. Are
they friendly? Are there children to play with your family?

You don't always think about these things when caught up in the experience of buying a home but be aware how important they become after you already own the house.  Take the time to do a little research before making one of the largest purchases of your life.

Please feel free to email me with any other suggestions
that may help others in choosing a home so I can
post them.
